DEBUT PERFORMANCE | JULY 2027 | WESTERVILLE, OHIO
The Story
It is September 1930 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Granata family is preparing for the Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri, the annual Italian festival that keeps their neighborhood connected to Molfetta, Italy.
Seventeen-year-old Teddy Granata is desperate for a life of his own choosing. His father expects him to join the family funeral home business. His girlfriend, Emilia, expects to marry and imagines a future with his family. But Teddy just has to find out what lies beyond Hoboken.
So he leaves Emilia and his family behind with hardly a goodbye and hops a freight train headed west.
On the rails, Teddy falls in with a community of hobos traveling across Depression-era America. What begins as a search for freedom brings him face to face with hunger, danger, and survival, and with people whose lives are shaped not by a sense of adventure but by having nowhere else to go.
Back in Hoboken, the people Teddy left behind must find their own way forward.
Drawing from America’s musical heritage, Hoboken explores freedom, family, and the cost of chasing adventure in an America that seems to care little for the lowest and least. It asks what we owe the people we leave behind, what makes a place home, and what it means to be seen in a country that too often looks the other way.
